I dont know about anyone else but I am really losing the will to post on AOL now.
Seems there is only one or 2 of us bothering to keep posting and there are only 25 members.
It is getting me down as it is so quiet on there.I hate posting all the time but I am just hoping others will come back again.
I wonder if this is the end of the road?
I really hope not.

Well I don't suppose I'd be allowed back even supposing I wanted to and could get my printer to work. But I can't help feeling that this postal registration idea was a mistake. I mean, I can understand in a way why he did it, as it will help to deter the passing lunatic type of poster, but I do think that it's going to put an awful lot of the decent ones off as well. One of the reasons I originally got the dreaded set-top-box was because I liked the idea of doing things via the Internet and avoiding all the hassle of writing, filling in forms and waiting weeks (or sometimes months)for replies and so on. What I like about E-mails and Internet ordering etc is that it's fast and it's INSTANT. So the idea of having to apply by post to do something on the Internet definitely puts me off.

Yes Clueless you have hit the nail on the head there alright.
It is hassle for people to register and like you said people cant be bothered. I know I find it bothersome dealing with paperwork now I am online I prefer E mails - instant stuff.
I think Andrew will have to look for another way otherwise it isnt looking good.
There again what other way could he use?

The worst thing of all is his dad has been out and about getting new photos done for the site and updating it and there is a whole load of great stuff on there.
Maybe lots of people pass through the site and look at stuff but as they dont post then it just looks as though no-one much is around anymore.
It is such a shame and this new registering thing isnt helping as we managed to build the site back up last time but this time it is different.
Sorry for moaning but I am really fed up how things have turned out after those nutters wrecked everything.

ML/Clueless Please dont give up on AOL. It brought us all together and we have found lovely friends from Andrews site. I have mailed my application form away to him but it will probably take two weeks to get there and two weeks to get confirmation back. So (although I was never a big poster) I will be posting sometime in Nov. at this rate. Clueless, your site IS wonderful and I will continue to write on here too because you ARE special. But let us not turn our backs on Andrew, he is trying to do what is best for his site and I believe it will get better.
ps. I cannot even get a little bird pic to come up, that how hopeless I am at these things. Help!!! I like tweetie bird.

ML, I did put in a note to ask if he could e-mail the password, I do not need the paperwork. So we will just have to see. I dont understand why we could not have e-mailed him the form as an attachment. I thought going thru the postoffice confirmed we were serious about joining AOL??? As Clueless said, I too also like the instant posting of the e-mail. This snail mail is the pits!!

sorry forgot. Perhaps with Cranzynance, like me, she did not have a british stamp for return mail. Would you believe the P.O. here wanted $6.50 to be able to send a "stamped addressed envelope to the UK". I'm not cheap, but that's highway robbery!

About 100 years ago when I had dozens of Penfriends abroad you used to be able to buy things called 'International Reply Coupons' which you could send abroad and the person you sent them to could then take them to their own Post Office in any country and exchange them for a return stamp. I don't suppose they do those any more ( no profit in them !) Toots, if you find a photo that you like, send me the url of the site you found it on and I can stick it up on here for you.

Aberdare online seems to have lost something. It has become almost an exclusive club.
How many times has a rogue poster stimulated us into a frenzied debate about a subject. That has now stopped.

toots, why dont you just put the equivalent of about 47p in the envelope & then andrew can buy the stamp himself! have a look at this http://www.royalmail.com/portal/default/all/home?paf_dm=full&paf_gear_id=100002&paf br / _gear_state=con_content&xmlPath br / =/docContent/xml/01_Mail/07_ br / Mailing_abroad/05_Prices/02_ br / Airmail_prices.xml for prices from the uk - you fall into zone 1 |

It will be such a shame if AOL closes .We have all had great times on there and made lots of friends,Andrew will have to come up with a different registration idea to get the posters back ,people just don't want to give their names and address out ,they wish to remain anonymous .

Binx that is what is worrying me it is looking like an exclusive club at the moment and us having a get together hasnt helped with that has it?
The last thing we want is for people to be put off and thinking we are a clique.
Yes we could do with someone stirring up the spirits a little again but not the nutters like we have had.
It all seems so flat though now.

Good grief you are in the wars!
Take it easy with those tablets they do make you giddy and prone to bumps and stumbles if you arent used to them.
BTW maybe an aromatherapy session might help ease the aches and relax you too!
I dont half miss my sessions they made a world of difference to me. Cant afford them now though.
Glad to hear you are preparing yourself to go back to work. I bet being stuck at home drives you potty as you arent used to it.

going back to the original post, I must admit that the postal registration for AOL has put me off.
For it to pick up again I think Andrew needs to look at online registration again.
Its a shame.

Gemini, I solved the problem by "Buying Andrew a few drinks" then if he wants to put a stamp on my envelope I wont feel so bad, I just need a code to get on his site. It will all come together soon...patience they call it. Sorry to hear about your accident, if I had to drive over there I would be in one every day! Those roads are SOOO narrow!!!

BB is right Andrew needs to find another way around things as I honestly dont think this is going to work for the reasons he and Gemini stated.
I am not posting on there for a little while as I feel I have posted way too much already and it just doesnt look good.
Just checked this morning and there havent been any further posts since Binx late afternoon.
BTW - great to have you back posting MR! So I am backing off for a short while and hopefully others join and will start posting again.
If things dont pick up pretty soon though Andrew will have to take drastic action and sort something else out.
So sad.

ML You have been doing a great job on AOL trying to keep it going .Time you had a break from it .It may pick up again who know . Andrew will have to get some easy way of letting people register .Toots said she will be back on there soon and welshgirl will be back in Canada soon and she has registered now ,then there's Rob once he gets his computer fixed . It seems also that a lot of the people that use to post on LG have not returned ,some of them were councillors I believe so they won't want to give there personal details .I wonder did the Paul Baccara business have something to do with it as well . It is hard to know what to post on there as there is no one to respond to what ever you put .Well we will have to wait and see what happens only time will tell .

For whats it's worth... most forums allow you to register on line and to post freely. However, the posts are moderated where indicated by the peers. i.e. the other users. If a user objects to a posting they can flag it, it is then removed immediately and only put back when moderated. Aha... but how do tou stop some nut getting on and simply objecting to others resonable posts. Well, each person is scored, kind of like a credibility scoring etc.. besides, if the nut were objecting to reasonable posts, they would soon be removed by the moderator.
Makes sense to me and as I say. Most forums use them.
That's tidy is that butt, is it. |

LHW that sounds more like it.
I wonder if Andrew could consider doing that?
Who knows.Maybe his site isnt compatible and to restart all over again like he did before would be a total nightmare for him as there is so much stuff on there.
I am sure he will find a way though eventually.
I guess we just have to hang on in there and hope.

I think Paul Baccara has done untold damage to be honest as it seems that RCTBC have now taken certain steps and he also drove a lot of people away and put them off the site.
Trouble is RCTBC would dearly love the site to collapse as you know.
I bet right now they are rubbing their hands with glee.
Makes me sooooo cross.

I just posted one last message for now on LG a basic positive one as I had been ranting on there ( big time) and it could put people right off so I thought it might level the negativity out a bit and not look so bad on there.
We can but hope.

LHW has got it.....AOL needs to be moderated by a number of people. Talking to Andrews dad last Saturday confirmed this. He went on about how time consuming it was and that certain individuals were wrecking the joint. So problems shared are problems halved. Less time consuming and less focus on Andrew or his Dad to keep it all in line.
ML, not sure if you knew this but Andrews dad also mentioned that AOL made the latest Council Minutes. I cant remember the reason(s) why but If I was a betting man I would say you are spot on about certain people in certain positions wanting it deliberatly stopped.

Yes the site made the RCTBC minutes and specific recommendations were made regarding it too see on LG under the reporting back of Paul Baccaras fiasco - For Information is the thread I think.
Too right they want rid of it as too much is coming out.The truth.
Andrews Dad also explained the difficulties to me too.One hell of a lot of time and work goes into it and they do have lives to lead -both are working for a start.
Thing is Moderating takes up a lot of time I know as I helped set up a large site and was Moderating it for sometimes 12 hrs a day in the beginning ( more fool me but that is another story).
If they did get Moderators on AOL it would be hard to find people with regular time to commit. So finding anyone who isnt really busy or whatever or willing or able to moderate is going to be a big problem I feel.

It would not need full time moderation. Quite simply, if a user submits something that offends another user, that user flags the message for moderation and the user that generated the message is barred until the moderator reinstates them or whatever. I'm sure it would not be too difficult to set up such a system without breaking what is already there.
As for RCT or anyone else attempting to close down the site. They could but try, it would just pop up again somewhere else.
Freedom of speech etc... the Internet is public domain. When the end of the world is nigh, for sure, the last thing left to go will be the internet!

i agree with what your saying about AOL, and feel a bit guilty as I could not keep my big mouth shut, and should not have said some of the things I did, but thats me, if I have something to say I say it rather than say it else where, but I don't say it to offend it just comes out that way sometimes, but I do hope AOL picks up.

Makes you wonder doesn't it about those rumours that certain parties were posting under several different names ? They obviously couldn't re-register if they only had the one postal address between them ! Perhaps I shouldn't talk as I HAVE posted under umpteen different names myself over the years, but that wasn't the same situation, I was mostly posting under silly names for a joke (like Jock McTavish who used to post jokes in a Scottish accent !) I wasn't being malicious, or trying to make trouble. ( Even those last couple of posts that got me banned weren't MEANT to cause a bother, lets just call it a temporary mental aberration ! LOL ) Also, some perfectly legitimate posters may not own their own computers, they could have been posting from public ones such as in these Internet cafes and so on, in which case they probably wouldn't have access to printers to copy out the registration forms. Whatever their reasons I don't think Andrew can ever expect to get as many people posting if they have to regiter by post. If someone pops in and sees something that interests them and want to post a reply they're not going to bother if they have to send in a postal registration and wait days for a reply. By the time they got the forms back they'd either have lost interest or forgotten what it was they were going to say in the first place. No, if Andrew wants to build the numbers back up again then I just don't think that postal registration is ever going to work.

I went nuts on there last night though and posted a stupid message and it wasnt nice as I was fuming and I had drowned my sorrows.I was stupid and I dread reading it. How shameful. But I just couldnt help myself.
I dont think this registration system is going to work either.

ML, don't worry about it I have not seen it yet will look later, you cannot be shot for saying the truth if andrew or anyone else cannot take a bit of critism then I am sorry but thats tough, that is the trouble today people are frightened to say anything for fear of offending, so I would not worry about it, think of some of the things others including myself has said on there in the past.

Murtle and Bob good job I was too bad to get out and about.
I felt like doing a Prescott and chucking a dozen oeufs at Jarman down the Ynys.
Would have been a waste of good grub though and Hubby wouldnt have had his egg and chips for tea - so just as well.
He is in a rotten enough mood as it is.
Gawd I hate that woman!
