Thank you all for the lovely welcome - and thanks Fussy for the Baileys - it didn't take 15 minutes for me to drink it - it was very much enjoyed. I might try and make it to your night out - but no promises. I've only just started back to work again after being off for a few months, so I'm rather stressed out about the whole situation at the moment. However,Rob is always telling me how much he enjoys all of your company, and certainly your evenings together.

I am glad you are at least thinking of coming to our get together .
I was really nervous the first time I went to one ,as I am not a very good mixer at all as I spent most of my time at home and only really mix with my family .
Maybe I come across on here as a very out going person but I can assure you I am not .
Once I got to the get together I really enjoyed it and made some nice new friends they are a great bunch .
Sorry to hear that you have been of work ill ,I do hope you are feeling a lot better now .Take one day at a time and hopefully all will come right in the end .

Hello Kate, welcome to Clueless's Madhouse ! Sorry I haven't spoken to you sooner, been having a lot of problems here lately. I also think this computer is about to have another one of it's funny turns, so if I don't say anything again for a while it's nothing personal, I'll just be busy bashing it with my sledgehammer !

Clueless, the last time you had problems with the computer wasn't anything to do with the fact that you'd try to fix it by using a sledgehammer, was it? I'm just querying, as I know that a computer and a sledgehammer aren't always compatible!

Oh, har-de-har Rob, very comical ! If you're not careful I'll be coming over there and whacking YOU ith my sledgehammer for being so b****y cheeky ! LOL !
Seriously though, this damn computer DOES make you feel that you want to bash it with something heavy, it's driving me barmy. It's too slow to catch a cold for starters (last night it took so long to download this site and then to get into the messages that I drank 3 cups of tea and fed the dogs and cats while it was doing it !) and sometimes it won't come on at all. It also freezes right in the middle of doing something, or opens the wrong site, or the screen suddenly goes COMPLETELY blank and I can't get the picture back again unless I switch off and try to switch on again (and sometimes have to try again anything up to 11 times, which is the record so far !)
All of last week the Internet Checkers wouldn't open up at all (that's now working again, touch wood !) Sometimes I can't get into my E-mail or the admin area of my website.
And one of the things that is REALLY driving me nuts is these Microsoft Internet Explorer pop-up boxes that keep appearing all the time offering me alls sorts of weird stuff that I don't want. There is one in particular that is VERY persistent, it seems to be offering me some sort of porno stuff and when I click to get rid of it it comes back straight away, then a box pops up saying 'You MUST click yes to take advantage of this offer' ! Sometimes I have to click 7 or 8 times before it finally goes away, but it still comes abck again next time I switch on. Between it all I tell you,
IT IS DRIVING ME INSANE !

Clueless
It seems that you are a teeny weeny bit upset with your computer .
These computers can be a pain sometimes ,they are supposed to be the up to the minute in thing to make life easier for us ,no need to leave your home for anything as you can find it and order it on the net .Also anything you want to know about anything is on the net as well .
But I do think sometimes they cause us a great deal of stress when they decide to play up .
Makes you wonder how people who work in offices on computers all day long cope with the stress ,or do office computers never go wrong .

Clueless, I'm really sorry about all the problems you're having with your computer. (See, I can be very sympathetic and understanding! )

Seriously though. How old's your PC, how much memory does it have and what sort of internet connection do you use? My old PC wasn't quite as bad as yours, but all the same it was S----L----O----W, even when I went onto Broadband. I recently upgraded the CPU (the tower unit, or as a friend of mine calls it the 'brains' of the computer) and it goes at the speed of sound without my doing an ML and throwing it through the window. I didn't have to buy a new monitor, keyboard, or any other paraphenalia so at less than £400 it worked out not too expensive -- and that included upgrading from Windows ME to Windows XP Pro.

Have a word with the guy who sorted out your last problem and see what he advises.

HTH!

O.K. Rob, I'll forgive you this time ! I've only had the computer since January 2003 and as far as I know it was all brand-new then. All the parts were still packed in their boxes and that An****dy put them all together on site, but where HE got the parts from in the first place I don't know, for all I know they could have fallen off the back of a lorry ! It's never been 100% since the day he set it up, but every time I mentioned it to him he always blamed me and said I must be doing something wrong, but I'm not that daft, I'm damned sure there was something wrong from the start, because when it conked out last October and he never came to repair it, he was very evasive whenever we mentioned the Guarantee, and then we asked him for the address of the place HE got it from so that we could contact them directly and he got quite grumpy, and after that, every time you phoned him his daughter would answer the phone and say that he wasn't home, but we think he'd told her to say that because he didn't want to talk about it any more. If it wasn't too heavy to carry I'd like to take it up to where he lives and shove it up his **** !
When the chap from Tenby repaired it in January he put a new modem in too and his boss didn't seem at all surprised when my Mother told him about the trouble we'd had with Andy, it soundd as if he'd heard quite a lot about him already ! He told her we should sue him, but with all the ilness we've had lately I don't think we're up to the strain.
The System properties tells me I've got 112.0MB RAM by the way. We don't have Broadband in this area yet and we DO have a lot of problems with both the telephone AND the Electricity, which might account for the slownwess and the fact that the computer keeps on disconnecting. But I don't think that would explain all the other things that happen---such as my keyboard's occasional forays into the German alphabet and the weird messages that pop up on the screen. I don't just mean the funny adverts by the way, but all the messages saying 'So-and-so has caused an error on something-or-other and will now close' and various other peculiar things that keep appearing and disappearing for no apparent reason----I still think THAT'S my Poltergeist !
Life was a lot easier in the days of Slates and bits of chalk !

I think from time to time we all get those pop up messages and error messages .I just delete them all . These computers do drive you nuts sometimes .I reckon that Andy conned you , as you say no doubt it fell of the back of a lorry ,as you should have at least had a 1 year guarantee with it .

I've tried deleting the error messages BG, but either they won't go away, or, if they do, the site I'm looking at goes with them ! Sometimes, when I delete an error message it actually switches the computer off completely and I have a H*** of a struggle getting it back on again. I probably WILL end up smashing it with that sledgehammer one of these days.
Now don't tell anybody this, but I'm much older than I look as I used to HAVE a slate when I was little ! It was quite nice too, with a nice wooden frame around it. I'm not sure where it came from as I always had it as far backa as I can remember, I expect it orininally belonged to one of my Grandparents.
Hmm, perhaps I've STILL got it, I wonder if maybe it's in one of those bags of odds and ends from Aberdare that I haven't finished sorting out ? It's probably not something that the burglars would have thought worth stealing so MAYBE it's still in there with the dirty and/or broken bits and pieces I haven't yet had the heart to sort out. I'll have to gird my loins and go and sort through it one of these days.

Introduction to Brewing
Karl J. Siebert
Introduction
As in the case of wine, beer contains many chemicals that collectively result in its sensory properties: color, flavor, haze and foam. Like wine making, brewing is a batch process, although breweries operate continuously through the year. Beer can be made from just barley malt, hops, yeast and water, as it still is in most of Germany. However, brewers in most other countries use an additional source of starch or sugar called an adjunct. Unlike the case in wine, where pressing a grape results in a fermentable substrate, the nutrients in the brewing raw materials are in a form that yeast is unable to utilize. The conversion of starch to simple sugars and proteins to amino acids occurs in the brewhouse. Fermentation of the resulting mixture, called wort, then occurs. Finally the freshly fermented beer is subjected to storage (in the case of a bottom-fermented, or lager, beer this is called lagering) to mature flavor and colloidal stability. After finishing (filtration and usually some stabilization treatment) the beer is packaged.

Brewhouse
A large number of mechanical and thermal operations are performed in the brewhouse in order to prepare a fermentable substrate for yeast and to extract flavor and color principles from malt and bitter principles and aroma from hops. Malt and cereal adjuncts are first milled. If a starchy adjunct is used, water is added to it and a small portion of the malt in the adjunct cooker and the mixture is heated rapidly to boiling. The malt enzymes partially digest the adjunct starch to render it less viscous. The remaining malt is mixed with water in the mashing vessel and subjected to a temperature program to facilitate the action of malt enzymes that convert starch into sugars and protein into amino acids. During the mashing process the contents of the adjunct cooker are pumped into the main mash and cause one of the temperature rises. Separation of the insoluble matter takes place in a filtration vessel, most often a lauter tun, where the malt husks serve as the filter medium. The wort is transferred to the kettle where it is heated to boiling. Toward the end of the boil hops are added and the bitter compounds are formed. Some hop aroma compounds are also extracted. Heat coagulated material is separated from the wort, which is then cooled and aerated.

Fermentation
Culture yeast is added to the cooled, aerated wort and fermentation begins. The fermentation produces alcohol and a range of other flavor compounds in lesser amounts. At the end of fermentation the yeast flocculates and either rises to the top of the fermenter (top fermenting or ale yeast) or sinks to the bottom (bottom fermenting or lager yeast). Most of the yeast is removed from the fermenter and reused in subsequent brews. The resulting beer is transferred to the storage tank.
Storage
The freshly fermented beer resides in the storage tank to allow time to achieve flavor and colloidal maturation. For a lager this generally tanks between 10 days and several weeks. For an ale this can be as short as three days.

Finishing
After storage the beer is filtered, subjected to stabilization treatment and packaged in bottles, cans, kegs or casks.

Clueless, from what little I know about the techie side of PCs, there's no way that yours should have developed problems like that within 12 months of your buying it.

The only way that I can think of for you to rule out your phoneline and electricity supply being the causes of the problems on your PC, would be if you were to test it out at another property (not your neighbour's) and still have the same problems. Otherwise, would the guy who fixed it for you at the beginning of the year be able to test it out this time in his place in Tenby?

The best advice I can give you at the moment is to speak to the guy from Tenby and tell him exactly what's happening. If he's as good as you say he is then at the very least he should give you free and honest advice. I'll also email you the phone number of the guy who sees to my PC. He'll be more than prepared to give you free advice over the phone.

As far as that A**y's concerned, put it down to experience and a lesson learned.

I know I haven't been of much help, but I hope that it's been of some.

Rob
